Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his objectives. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. The historical Roman tradition of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. Adjustments and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Keeping Your Garden Water fountain Tidy

Keeping Garden Water fountain Tidy 331835564493782484.jpg Keeping Your Garden Water fountain Tidy Proper care and regular cleaning are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is important to clean it out and remove any debris or foreign elements that might have dropped into or onto it. On top of that, algae can be a problem, as sunshine hitting the water permits it to form easily. To prevent this, take vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or sea salt and add directly into the water. Another option is to blend bleach into the water, but this action can harm wild animals and so should really be avoided.

No more than three-four months should really go by without an extensive cleaning of a fountain. To start with you must drain the water. Then use a soft rag and mild cleanser to scrub the inside. If there are any tiny grooves, work with a toothbrush to get every spot. Be sure to completely rinse the inside of the fountain to make sure all the soap is gone.

Various organisms and calcium deposits may get inside the pump, so it is best to take it apart and clean it thoroughly. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain components that will accumulate inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain daily and add water if you notice that the level is too low. Allowing the water to drop below the pump’s intake level, can cause serious damage and even make the pump burn out - an undesired outcome!
